I signed up to SmoothStreams in the latest opening window. I didn't know anything about SS, everything is so very secretive, no channel lists, hell even finding how to sign up is a task in itself. But everyone raves about it so must be something in it right?
I signed up via Starhosting. Easy enough however having been around a few IPTV services in my time when you sign up they usually send you details of how to get going, again not with Smoothstreams, you have to figure this all out yourself. All the info is found on a message board which you have to request an invitation for.
Speed is not the aim of the game here with SS, any support tickets, or requests usually take a day for a reply,
So finally got up and running and underwhelmed is an understatement. There are about 150 channels, not all active either, most well 90% are USA, Big focus on sport, all a bit crappy really. No VOD all very basic.
Picture quality is very good but I have had buffering occasionally so its not perfect, will be interesting to see how it fairs out when 3pm Soccer start on Saturday.
Your review, while accurate, is a bit misleading for a couple of reasons: (former smoothstreams subscriber here, so first hand experience with the service)
smoothstreams is a sports first service. that the main point of it, the "channels" are active but they will interrupt what is on a channel to air a sporting event if they need to, they have always been that way. They might get a new channel sometimes, but again, thats not their priority, the priority is that the sports are up and being presented. If your coming to SS looking for an IPTV service like all the others, you will be dissapointed, just as you are. But if you are coming to SS looking for all the sports with mostly reliable good streams, then you will be happy with your choice.
regarding the sign up. i didnt get in on the black friday deals but i saw the tweets and posts about it. Smoothstreams has never been a handholding type of service. their customer service is decent via ticket system and IRC, but theyre not going to walk you through things like some other providers. they expect you to be able to figure some things out. The forum is good and might take a couple days to get access, but you also can log into your web-player and start watching, as well as get some info to load it on your devices.
So, like i said, your review is accurate, but you signed up expecting one thing, and got something different, which granted isn't ideal. but then again, you signed up for something not knowing what you were really signing up for.
