SmoothStreams Review

by thehangryguy

I signed up to SmoothStreams in the latest opening window. I didn't know anything about SS, everything is so very secretive, no channel lists, hell even finding how to sign up is a task in itself. But everyone raves about it so must be something in it right?

I signed up via Starhosting. Easy enough however having been around a few IPTV services in my time when you sign up they usually send you details of how to get going, again not with Smoothstreams, you have to figure this all out yourself. All the info is found on a message board which you have to request an invitation for.

Speed is not the aim of the game here with SS, any support tickets, or requests usually take a day for a reply,

So finally got up and running and underwhelmed is an understatement. There are about 150 channels, not all active either, most well 90% are USA, Big focus on sport, all a bit crappy really. No VOD all very basic.

Picture quality is very good but I have had buffering occasionally so its not perfect, will be interesting to see how it fairs out when 3pm Soccer start on Saturday.

Your review, while accurate, is a bit misleading for a couple of reasons: (former smoothstreams subscriber here, so first hand experience with the service)

smoothstreams is a sports first service. that the main point of it, the "channels" are active but they will interrupt what is on a channel to air a sporting event if they need to, they have always been that way. They might get a new channel sometimes, but again, thats not their priority, the priority is that the sports are up and being presented. If your coming to SS looking for an IPTV service like all the others, you will be dissapointed, just as you are. But if you are coming to SS looking for all the sports with mostly reliable good streams, then you will be happy with your choice.

regarding the sign up. i didnt get in on the black friday deals but i saw the tweets and posts about it. Smoothstreams has never been a handholding type of service. their customer service is decent via ticket system and IRC, but theyre not going to walk you through things like some other providers. they expect you to be able to figure some things out. The forum is good and might take a couple days to get access, but you also can log into your web-player and start watching, as well as get some info to load it on your devices.

So, like i said, your review is accurate, but you signed up expecting one thing, and got something different, which granted isn't ideal. but then again, you signed up for something not knowing what you were really signing up for.

If someone would be nice enough to message me on how the hell to actually sign up that would be fantastic. I keep seeing to just use google to find out but I’m either a moron or it’s a bit tougher to find than what I’ve been told. I know I’m running out of time to grab a sub. Today is it and I may be too late already. Thanks

Mine has slight buffering for the first 20 sec, then it's fine. I am same as you, signed up blindly for one year yesterday. My dad seems to like it and I can use it at my house too. So all is good. I am located in the USA. Was 80-something for one year with black Friday coupon

Yeah, I'm been tempted to just bite the bullet on the fairly lame payment structure that forces you into making a long term commitment, in the name of actually putting up the first/only in-depth review on it since the one I did myself over a year ago...but out of principle I just haven't been able to talk myself into it. Dub_starr makes a decent point, but the fact he himself is only coming forward with that still vague info after-the-fact and only when somebody is bad talking the service unfortunately just contributes to the wrong expectations problem more then it helps imo.

Bottomline - In the grander scheme it's not Illuminati type hush hush as much as it's hype is built entirely around soccer fanatics, who generally aren't out there trying and making comparisons to alternative options, that found something that works for them and stick with it. Which I'm assuming (since I actually don't care or test soccer feeds myself) if you yourself are after soccer feeds it should treat you well enough in that respect.

That said, if you are the type cares about having a comparably decent UI/EPG, don't shy away from making the effort to shop around while educating yourself on what alternative options are out there, and have a primary "best in sports" interest that extends outside of soccer....Smoothstreams honestly doesn't stand up all that well as a whole. Especially with 60fps feeds on stuff like US sports not being nearly as rare/unique as they used to be among providers, and many which don't force you into a long term sub buy on servers that don't have the most stellar track record out there to boot.

Gotta give them market approach credit though. Guessing they cleaned up this black friday when those "exclusive club" doors were suddenly wide open for as many 1 year special buys as they could pump out. Probably a much less consistently tedious/stressful way to fill their servers back up ;)

I still use smooth as my goto for sports. I actually like the EPG. Most other services use the channel name to indicate when the event is on. Smoothproxy let's me see what I want. Buffering.... Only time I've consistently had it is during NFL. EpL and NHL are perfect. MMA .... Tnt and others usually have something better. There are a few services that have bt sports 1080@50fps....

Up to this point I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews but I’m not expecting a whole lot. I have buffering problems with my current sub with helix (and other subs in the past) but I have a suspicion that it’s due to using an AFTV. I’m expecting my Nvidia Shield any day now and I may just hold off until I see what those results are.

Thanks for the info!

So an update to my review. After signing up on Black Friday I bought a 4K Firestick. It does not work correctly with smooth streams and they have a few threads on their boards about this but no fix.

I opened a ticket, no reply to ticket. I then notice I can’t log in. Yep they cancelled my account and no refund. So that’s the kinda cowboys these are. PayPal dispute now opened and I’m sure they don’t want to risk PayPal holding their funds.

Got mixed opinions on this - it very much sounds like you jumped in the deep end without realising what you actually signed up for but then in your defence it is extremely overly complicated to actually find out what they offer - a true double edged sword.

As for smoothstreams itself it's one of the easiest way to watch sport especially on the Kodi category view just scroll and click on event - job done.

In my opinion it's best get a normal IPTV sub to complement your SS sub then use SS for sport with the great streams in 60fps and minimal time delay (I don't know why this isn't mentioned more nothing worse then watching a stream 1-2 minutes behind live) then IPTV for other channels.

Stick with SS for sport you won't be disappointed.

It's hard to find a tsn feed that is better than smoothstream. Last week's NFL worked flawlessly for me on several providers including smooth.
