My 90 days with IPGuys - A retrospective review

by throwww6

Hello reddiors. I'm here to give me 2¢ worth on this much talked about IPTV provider, that seems to get praised a lot here as being the most "stable" or "rock-solid" service available. Are these claims true, or just a lot of advertising hot air? Read on to find out.

Background When I started my subscription with IPguys, I already had 6 months of experience with various IPTV services. I use an Android box, so naturally I test all the services I use with Kodi and STB Emulator. I also have a Mag 254 which I used for this review (I copy it's MAC address over to Kodi stalker and STBEmu), and my connection speed is a stable 50Mbps from a good ISP.

Registering and setup Signing-up was a little difficult, because IPguys do not sell the service themselves, so you have to find a reseller. Finding one wasn't that easy either since resellers give the service a custom name. But I finally found one called "blue server". After signing up, I'm told to email them my MAC address, and they tell me that Kodi "is bad for IPTV" and I shouldn't use it (wtf?). Also, they inform me not to change my mind later because I can ONLY use the service with the first device I login with, which is annoying. Most other providers offer some sort of "Mac reset" facility. After that was done, logging in with my Mag was as simple as entering the correct portal, and rebooting. I also managed to get it up and working on STB Emulator, but it took a lot of fiddling with the Mac and serial number to get it to work.

Channels The usual suspects are all included here (ABC, NBC, etc). But other than the major channels, the selection is a little disappointing, to be honest. There were no UK channels to speak of (BBC, ITV, Channel 4). It seems IPguys mainly focuses on Canadian channels, and many non-Canadian channels are left out. Movie selection was great though, just about every single movie channel I could think of.

Layout Similar channels are grouped together which kept things sorted nicely, even if you don't use a favourites list. The EPG worked flawlessly, and I never had an issue with it over the course of 3 months, but none of the channels had icons (that most other providers have), which is very annoying when browsing.

International channels This is by far one of the worst things about IPguys. It seems most of their international channels are sourced from other providers. Most of them contain watermarks/logos in the corner that I've seen before from free providers (such as the yellow lion head), and most of these channels work poorly. Half of the OSN channels, for example, were either mislabled or simply didn't load. And the ones that did, buffered constantly. It was a horrible experience.

Stability and quality One of the main selling points on IPguys has been it's "rock solid" stability. I didn't get much of a chance to experience this. All of their core channels loaded every time (unlike IKS66/Rocket/NFPS, for example, which frequently get stuck on loading), but buffering was still present from time to time, although it was rare on the non-international channels. Also what's worse was a lot of their core channels were either in standard def (not even 720p), or had interlacing issues which was quite jarring to look at.

Added features Timeshift was a nice addition that not every IPTV server provides, but it was only available on a small number of channels (about a dozen or so, and most of them were Canadian news channels). But it did work well, with channels going back up to 12 hours, if I recall correctly. It's a shame though it wasn't offered on channels that mattered, instead of the news.

Support Non-existant. IPguys don't even have a website. I hope you find a good reseller who answers emails and doesn't mind helping you with any questions you might have.

Conclusion While a nice attempt at a rock-solid service, IPguys just doesn't hit the mark for me, and doesn't live up to the Reddit hype. I'm glad I tried it out, and it certainly has some nice features that are hard to come by these days, but at the price they are asking ($10 per month), I expected more. I would give this a soft-pass, unless you're starved for a more Canadian-centric experience, for some reason.

This a great review! Finally some common sense. The hype of IPGUYS on Reddit is maddening. I always wonder why there are no reviews of IPGUYS... well the service is not much to write about. It kinda sucks. Great honest review.

A few people have pointed me in the direction of this post so I could share any insight on this. I hope you do not take offence to my post. I often offend people and come across a bit abrupt, and I have taken much care to repond in a fairly (I hope) respectable way.

First off, I'd like to say I love the review. It's VERY detailed, and portrays a very real experience you have had. And it's appreciated. It's also nice seeing someone post a review that has good reddit karma and isn't out just to bash a provider.

But, if I may add some points, just to argue the other side of the coin.

Devices: Here's a key spot where your review falls short. You have not used this service on a "supported" stalker client. You are accessing the server in a manner that was no designed by the Informir software/team. Using emulation to clone mag software which is disigned to work with LINUX only can be buggy, not to mention the Kodi stalker PVR client has been discontinued and never left the beta stage.

Using a non-supported device is always a "your results may vary" ordeal, and in your case it seemed to actually work quite well for you.

Support : I don't know who sells this blue service or who your reseller is, so I can't comment on that. However support from some resellers exceed that of many providers. This was a hot topic the other day in the chat room, and I personally know of resellers that actually have toll free telephone numbers, and some even will work with you over SMS. Additionally, I know some resellers that are part of the /r/iptvgta team that have actually done HOUSE calls for customers, effectively troubleshooting networking concerns. Don't believe me? Hit up the /r/IPTV discord chat channel and ask around.

Channels & Internationals : This is obviously personal preference, and I agree with your points here. Ipguys scans in around 1100 stations, compared to that of say Express with about 2300 or Voodoo with 3000+...so yes, much less channel selection. (I'm only doing that comparison because they are stalker only servers. They hit a different market than say, Fab or Epic.)

While you may think lack of internationals is a bad thing, many resellers get requests from customers on a daily basis asking "can you remove internationals, I dont want them on here...too much to scroll thru etc . While you see this as a negative, most Canadians and Americans actually find this a selling feature .

Quality & Reliability : I agree with most of your points. I usually explain their service as being "DVD" like quality. But as for buffering and stability... I can tell you on a supported device, with proper network configuration, they live up to their hype. This so called hype was not created by resellers.

The reliability claims over the years are from people that use the service extensively for months or years. Not just from people like myself.

Conclusion: While nobody will disagree that the quality is not HD, it's hard to say that 1100 working stations with near perfect EPG information for $10/month is of bad value.

I do understand you have very high expectations, and rightly so, we all should. But to think that you'll get front-line customer support, with every channel you want (1100 is not enough?), with timeshifting on every channel you want, in the layout you want (channel icons), with easy registering and setup on non-supported, beta devices...all for $10, seems a bit unrealistic, don't you think?

PS- I also get people asking me all the time what servers I use for my video reviews of different devices etc, and I won't do a review without using ipguys. I just won't. It's my goto server when reliability is key. I don't use IPGuys for my own TV watching, I don't even have my own sub. But, I have set up many seniors, including my parents who have 2 supported devices. They have been using ipguys for over a year, and I've never received a phone call with buffering. They use the TV about 8 hours a day on average. My experience, as with many, have been amazing.

Please remember that people doing reviews on reddit are techy type people. IPguys is like a cult, has a MASSIVE client base, but many are not tech savvy and many have never heard of reddit. They just turn on their tv and knows it works. These people you'll never hear from, no complaints, no phone calls. Nothing. These clients are every resellers dream come true. And this has been a fact of life for many dealers/resellers for years now when dealing with ipguys.

All these 24-hour trials and testing and reviews and people switching services twice a month...this is all new. This is something that social media has created. This is something that the chinese with their cheap android box and clones, created. This frustrating iptv market with resellers undercutting eachother and bashing eachother, and sketchy marketing campaigns and marketing, is something we as a community created.

Did you try fabIPTV? I am curious the other services you had and which you found the best so far?

I subbed with IPGuys about a month ago just to try it out. Its fine. It works when my ISP is struggling with latency or speed, which can happen sometimes in my neighbourhood for some reason, especially during high traffic times like early evening. During those times, when Fab and Epic are buffering like crazy because their HD content requires a speed I just can't get, Guys is a great fallback.

That said, I've upgraded my internet service starting in June so I don't plan to renew IPGuys in the hope that I won't need that fallback. The picture quality is pretty terrible.

Not to be a pain in the ass but aren't all reviews "retrospective"? :P

But yeah good review. I am not a fan of IPGuys either. I believe that the old-school services like IPGuys are in the twilight of their existence and that there are services that offer far more.

Thanks for the review. I was thinking about "scouring" the dark spaces of the interwebs to look for a reseller. I'll pass ATM.

It's good to hear from another former victim of IPTV Zeta, iks, privateserver, NFPS, etc. I haven't tried ipguys but it does seem like there is an awful lot hype on here regarding certain providers. I just did a trial of fan and while it is light years better than IPTV Zeta, iks, privateserver, NFPS, etc., it too has it's problems. The biggest problem is not being able to watch the show you want when you want. Primetime buffers on popular shows and TV channels to the point where they become unwatchable. However, it is much better that IPTV Zeta, iks, privateserver, NFPS, etc. And I can always watch the recording on kodi.

Thank you for this review. It sounds like these guys need to have a better support network. I am mainly interested in Arabic channels in good quality. How do you reckon these guys will sail in this category?

It's been a real struggle to find a reliable IPTV with good Arabic channels. If anybody can advise of a service it would be great help.

Amazing, comprehensive review. Very well done!
