Mano's CrownTV Review

by manosteel9423

Well, for those that haven't read my Epic review, I'll give a minor breakdown of my experience. I got into this hobby at the end of February. I briefly toyed with Kodi for IPTV, but quickly learned that a dedicated box was the way to go. I bought my Dreamlink T1 in early March and haven't looked back. Since then, I have tested 6 different services for at least 30 days and I am reviewing them one at time. Here's the link to my Epicstreams review:

Today I'm going to talk about CrownTV.

Crown was one of the first services I tried and when I first started with it I was very excited because I noticed that the network stations (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) were from Detroit, which is local for me in southwestern Ontario. They also had the standard New York networks as well. The only problem was the video quality on the Detroit channels was far from HD, but still exciting.

As for overall channel selection, anybody would be hard pressed to find a service that offers a better selection of channels. If you can think of it, Crown probably has it. Aside from all of the standard English and international channels, they also carry a significant number of 24/7 channels. These have different movies and TV series in a 24/7 loop. If your a fan of Big Bang Theory, for example, there is a channel that just plays episodes of that channel in a loop. If you like the Batman movies, you can watch them all in sequence over and over again. Pretty cool feature.

Video quality is a bit of a mixed bag on Crown. Like I said, the network stations were lower quality...New York versions were better than the Detroit versions. Movie channels and many other entertainment channels were high quality feeds. All the PPV/24/7 channels seemed to be in HD or close to it. Buffering was not a significant issue although it wasn't non-existent either. Of the services I tried, it was less stable than Express, but more stable than some of the smaller services.

Next, the EPG. As you know from my last review, the EPG is a big deal for me. With a wife and kid who are annoyed easily and, therefore annoy me when things don't work seemlessly, an accurate and well populated EPG is very important to me. Crown is certainly not great in this department. Maybe its because there are SO many channels? Once again, I spent the time to go through all the English channels and record a favourites list with just the channels that populated information on the EPG. I got about 240 channels, but that included all the 24/7 channels which don't actually show what's on at any given time, just that its the "Big Bang Theory Channel" on the left of the EPG. All total, there was probably about 180-190 english channels with info. Not bad, but not great for a service this big.

Overall, when I first subbed with Crown it was a favourite. I enjoyed the stability and the local stations. I really liked the PPV movies and 24/7 channels. However, as I tried more and more services, Crown fell down the list. Better picture quality and more fully populated EPGs can be had with other services, like Epic, Flawless and Fab, that offer close to the same stability.

Would I recommend Crown? Absolutely, for the right person. For someone looking for lots of international content, VOD, movie channels, etc, its an excellent service, especially if the EPG isn't that important to you.

Feel free to ask any questions if I didn't cover something of interest to someone. I'll try to respond within a day or so.

I've tried three different services in a couple of weeks. I'm very much like you in that regard. Keep up the great reviews!

Does crown have a lot of tv shows in VOD?

From what I can tell using Crown for nearly a month now, they don't have EPG on any UK channels (entertainment or sports) but the US/CA channels do for the most part have good EPG. Also, this is one of the few servers where the EPG on the T1 loads immediately for all channels.

Quality and reliability of channels is pretty decent and VOD is massive.

I've tried crown, epic, flawless and fab (fab and crown on single day trials). For some reason, crown had by far the best video frame rates , channel loading and epg loading speeds on a BuzzTV XPL 2000. I like the channel assortment and organization on flawless and epic a lot as well as the excellent support - crown can feel like a supermarket with the items stocked at random locations but video quality is important to me. I'm going to test Kodi running on a pretty fast Mac connected to the TV against the set-top-box I am evaluating as the eye-test says the Mac has better video quality on Epic and Flawless than the STB. If needed, I can repurpose an old Mac if I can get a better experience.

Mano, Can you review geniptv? They are also offering free trial and looks promising.

I am totally newby so forgive me if I start asking a silly question: what is EPG?

Up to now I was able to watch my favourite sports: Latin American soccer but the set-up I had for this doesn't work anymore. I live in Canada and the Canadian companies providing TV couldn't care less about that. So I need to resort to some IPTV provider. I am not too concerned about HD or SD, all what I care about is that I can watch what I would like to watch. I am thinking of buying a MAG 254 or 256, but before I take that decision I would like to know which service provider is goof for Latin American soccer and also La Liga. It has to have: Fox Sports en Español, TyC, ESPN and BeinSports en Español. Thanks.

What is the web site for CrownTV? I want to see their channel list, pricing, etc. Thanks.

I've been using Crown for the last couple months. I've been pretty happy for the most part. I don't speak any other languages so all Ive watched is English channels...but they've been good. It has went down a couple times but only during a server reset and was right back up. Probably my favorite part about Crown TV is that they have TONS of channels that have 7 day catch-up.
So, if I'm away from home and miss my favorite teams game or my favorite TV show....I can go home and catch it later. Just like having a PVR set to dozens of channels. I like the service.
If anybody is looking for a reseller...send me a message and I can hook you up with my guy. He's got great customer service and can be reached through FB Messenger quite often. Not an automated email on a website. So anyway....I just wanted to add the part (to the original review) about the catch up service.

PS it was this review that got me to try the service out. Thanks to the OP!

I share most of what you are saying about Crown. I will try to post my own review at some time, but what I would like to add to your review is that their support is non-existent. I sent them two messages asking or making comments about some issues I had and they never bothered to respond.
